After what feels like a ridiculously long wait the BBC have just confirmed that there will be a new series of The Great British Sewing Bee filming in 2018.  The long awaited series 5 will be filming this summer, and applications open on the 25th of April until the 28th of May 2018.

There are a couple of big changes this series, long running presenter Claudia Winkleman will not be returning this year, she is being replaced by comedian Joe Lycett who I imagine will bring quite a different take on the show. There is also a big behind the scenes change this year too, Claire Louise Hardie the sewing producer on the previous 4 series who is responsible for planning the challenges and drafts many of the patterns used by contestants will not be returning for this series. She is busy studying for her masters degree but you can also find her on The Sewing Quarter, writing her monthly column for Love Sewing Magazine and running fab online and London based sewing courses at The Thrifty Stitcher.

So series 5 will probably have a different feel to it then the first 4 series, but either way there are thousands of us desperate to see it back on our screens. When is disappeared a couple years ago over 36,000 people signed the Change.org petition to bring it back, so we're glad the BBC listened. There was speculation that like The Great British Bake Off (Also produced by Love Productions) The Great British Sewing Bee may move to channel 4.  Luckily those were untrue and it is staying with BBC2 which means there will be no adverts to interrupt our viewing pleasure.

I'm sure women throughout the country will be relieved to hear that Patrick Grant is returning as a judge, alongside newer judge Esme Young (read our interview with Esme here).

What are they looking for?

They want people who have skill, enthusiasm and a love of sewing. They are looking for lively characters who are comfortable being filmed. They are seeking a range of ages, locations, genders and diversity to represent Britian's stitchers.

They also want people who will be free to film this summer, filming is expected to take place in July/August/September 2018.

Air Date

There has been no confirmation of the air date yet but based upon the time between filming and airing of the previous series we should be looking at late 2018 or early 2019 for it to appear on our screens. My gut feeling is that we will see it before Christmas, maybe October/November time. I think with all the excitement arounds the shows return they will not want to keep us waiting too long.
