The Beginner's Guide to Dressmaking - new book by Wendy Ward

Wendy Ward, owner of MIY Workshop in Brighton has been a part of The Sewing Directory for over 3 years now.  In that time I have watched her business grow as she expanded into sewing patterns, making her own sewing tools and finally writing her own book. The Beginners Guide to Dressmaking by Wendy Ward

If you've ever followed Wendy on social media or read her blog you will know she is very generous with sharing her sewing knowledge.  You may in fact have spotted her guide to sewing with knit fabrics on this site. Now she is laying all her knowledge out for you in her new book, to teach you how to make your own wardrobe.

She told me that she decided to write this book because she spotted a huge gap in the market for a sewing book that included full-size patterns for everyday clothes with a modern contemporary look.

She said

'I hope I’ve managed to create an accessible book for people who have started to sew but feel daunted by making their own clothes, with designs for clothes which can be worn everyday, not just special occasions, that can be made in a wide variety of fabrics and can be made unique to each reader’s own style by using the ideas in the Customising section. '

Having seen the book I certainly think she achieved her objective.  The garments are designed to be comfy and for everyday use, like t-shirts and loose fit wide leg trousers.  Not formal dresses you will barely wear, or skirts that will only get worn in the summer.  With the variations included on the 6 basic garments (t-shirt, trousers, shift dress, zipped jacket, fish tail skirt and maxi dress/skirt) you could create a wardrobe of over 20 garments to wear all year round.

Her book will be on sale on the 7th of November, but in the meantime you can pre-order it on Amazon here.
