We find out more about new vintage sewing pattern company Eliza M.

Please tell us about Eliza M what do you sell and how did the concept come about?

Eliza M is an online vintage style clothes pattern boutique specialising in vintage inspired patterns for beginner or returning sewers.  The concept came about because I was looking for a way to sew my own vintage inspired wardrobe from easy to make and follow patterns, I had tried vintage patterns but they were to difficult for me to fathom out!  So I got together with a talented pattern cutter and away we went.

What skill level are your patterns and what size range do they cover?

My patterns are for beginners, returning sewers and advanced beginners.  They range from a size 10 to a size 22.

Could you tell us a little about each of the current patterns you have at the moment?

Phew, there are quite a few in the new range, 18 to be exact in total.  But mainly they are simple to make bodice and skirt dresses with vintage inspired full circle skirts, there is a gorgeous wriggle skirt too and a simple A Line skirt.   We have hop and swing high waisted pants and a Jackie Onassis style suit, all the designs are directly influenced by an era from the 30’s through to the 60’s.Pussy blouse and swing trouser patter from Eliza

Are you working on any new designs, can you tell us anything about them?

The intense activity of the last year has resulted in us having a really large range for an independent pattern company and we aim to add to our designs every season by at least 12.  We will be releasing two special Christmas patterns late September, these will be vintage glamour inspired, so watch our site for more details nearer the time.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Ooh, well all sorts of places, vintage magazines, old movies and photographs and sometimes the fabrics themselves can inspire a certain design.

Who are your ultimate vintage icons?

That’s easy for me, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, and of course Grace Kelly.

Please tell us more about you and your background, what did you do before Eliza M?  When and how did you learn to sew?

Before Eliza M I ran an advertising paper which was very stressful and high pressured, I turned to sewing as a way to be creative and relax mainly.   I am self taught and really have only been sewing for little over a year now.  I knew there were women like me who were fed up of mass produced, ill fitting expensive (or indeed cheap) clothes, and who would love the chance to sew their own style if it was presented in an up to date and  easy to understand way.Halter neck vintage dress pattern

How did you get from learning dressmaking to pattern designing so fast?  Are there any useful resources or books you used that you can share with us?

I am a great believer in ‘anything is possible’ but even I admit pattern drafting takes a long time to perfect and learn, so the actual pattern cutting is done by Joy  a member of the Eliza M team.  She has over twenty years experience in fashion and design.  I design the garments and Joy translates those designs into workable patterns.  It has always really worked for us as I was a beginner sewer and the guinea pig for all the new patterns.  If I didn’t understand a pattern then the chances were that other beginners wouldn’t either that way we knew immediately what needed to change for the pattern to be easier to understand and construct.  For anybody wanting to learn pattern cutting in Manchester at least, the wonderful designer/maker Collette Costello offers one to one tuition.

What do you have planned for the future?

Lots more exciting patterns and collaborations with fabric suppliers and designers hopefully!
