Winter Warmers
We present out pick of the warm winter fabrics that you can make things to snuggle up to in the coldest winter we've had for quite some time. We haven't included any flannel fabrics because we have already devoted a whole article to flannel fabrics here.
We abolutely love this pin cord fabric - Birds of Norway by Micheal Miller - that is available for purchase on the Fancy Moon website. The stunning design would make a fabulous skirt or toddler dress, or if you are bold enough a colourful pair of trousers. I also think it would be great fabric for making a wheat pillow to snuggle up to. See our tutorial for making wheat pillows here, they would make brilliant Christmas presents.
This fabric is available for £12.98 per metre on the Fancy Moon website here.
Abakhan Fabrics, Hobby & Home have a huge range of fleece fabrics, from plain fleece to neon polar fleece and plain micro fleece. They have a wide range of colours in the plain fleece, starting from just £3.49 per metre and lots of colourful designs on their printed fleece priced at around £5-£6 per metre.
We love this bright colourful jungle fleece priced at £6.45 a metre, which can be found here. It would be great for a warm blanket, colourful scarf or snuggly pyjamas for the kids.
The Cloth Seller stock a range of organic anf fairtrade fabrics, including organic jersey fabric. Our favourite is the pictured Artic Paisley Jersey which would make great skirts or top, or even a man's shirt.
It is priced at £14.60 a metre, available for purchase here. If you sign up to their Cloth Club you could get it for even cheaper with one of the exclusive discounts they offer to members.
If plain jersey if more your thing then you should visit www.raystitch.co.uk, they have a range of plain jersey fabrics such as the deep red one pictured, priced at £6 per half metre. They also have some striped and dotty jersey too. These fabrics would make great tops or warm trousers. I can see the pictured red jersey making a great swirley skirt to be worn with thick black tights underneath, very christmassy.
Your can view Raystitch's Jersey range here: http://www.raystitch.co.uk/fabric/jersey.html
The Fabric Loft have recently expanded their range to include flannel fabrics and corduroys. Their plain coloured corduroys cost £13.00 a metre and can be purchased in half metres. They would make lovely trousers, or a corduroy jacket is always a great winter warmer.
I've also been informed by Lizzet, the owner of The Fabric Loft, that these corduroys are a lot softer than standard corduroy so would also be ideal for cushions or hot water bottle covers.
You can view their corduroys here.
Fabric 8 offer jersey fabrics, fleece in 20 different colours and a range of animal print fur
such as the one pictured. You can get the fur in tiger print, zebra, cow, leopard and even dalmation print priced at £10.10 per metre. The width of the fabric is 1.5 metre so just 1 metre would be enough for a very warm furry throw to wrap yourself in when snuggled up on the sofa in the evenings.
You can view their fur fabrics here.
If you are looking for something a bit more waterproof Profabrics offer a laminated fleece fabric, which consists of 2 different coloured pieces of fleece (the one shown is black & sliver) which are laminated to a central breathable but waterproof membrane. Making this fleece ideal for coats or a hoodie.
It is priced at £14.46 plus VAT per metre and is available in a few different colour combinations. To view the black and silver click here.
If knitting is more your thing then have a look at the chunky knitting yarns available from the Top Stitch website. We love this funky blue and multi coloured one, it would be great for scarves, hats and gloves or a nice wooly jumper.
The pictured yarn costs £2.25 and you can view the full range of their chunky knitting yarns by clicking here.
Hulu crafts have a huge range of yarns, and don't be put off if you haven't tried knitting before. Why not try this beginners sock knitting kit? For £10.50 you get everything you need to knit yourself a pair of socks, using the yarn of your choice.
