Baby Blanket Tutorial
Material required:
4 units of patterned Voile
4 units of Flannel
2 units of Voile Solid for the binding
1 unit = 1 Fat quarter (50cm x 55cm)
The combination of supple cotton voile on one side and the cozy cotton flannel on the other s
ide is the absolute prefect weight for a baby blanket. Not to mention these wrap, tuck & swaddle so beautifully.
If you haven't worked with flannel or voile before then join the club. Having made this we are complete flannel & voile converts!
Instructions:
1. Wash first - All of the fabrics (flannel and voiles) can go into the washing machine together on a warm wash.
2. Make the edging - The edging is bias cut from the solid voile. It's important to cut on the bias (diagonal strips) as you will be sewing it on around the corners of the blanket and bias will make this easier and add strength. You don't have to use voile for the edging but whatever you use bias cut it.
For a blanket 90cm x 110cm you will need 4m of edging. Strips of around 4cm will make an edging of 1cm. Take a 4cm strip fold and press along the centre lengthwise. The fold under each raw edge and press again.
3. Cut curves - Making nice smooth curves is also easy, just use the curve of a salad plate or some such traceable item to trim each of the corners from your flannel and patterned voile rectangles.
4. Attach the blanket pieces - place the patterned voile and the flannel wrong sides together and baste around the edges.
5. Attach the edging to the blanket.
The blanket is really simple to make, looks luxurious and gorgeous when finished. Any new parent would be so happy to receive this as a present.
